Art%20Teacher%20Practitioner.docx

This is a link to a survey being conducted by Rebecca Lee who was my intern last fall at Shanghai American School about how we balance our teaching and our own art practice.  Rebecca is a talented artist and a complete natural in the classroom.  She is studying at Christchurch University, Canterbury, England.  If you can spare 15-20 minutes to reply to her survey, she'd be so grateful.  I found the survey allowed me to pause and so some reflection on the balance of artist and educator.  The Morning Coffee Roundtable Discussion in Taipei of this very topic prompts me to include the link here.  Joan

ARARTE Weekend Workshop Celebrates 5 years! 6th Annual at Hong Kong International School October 18-20

What a terrific weekend workshop Oct 12-14 hosted by Taipei American School thanks to Cesar Reyes and Crew! Feedback from the workshop has been so positive. Congratulations to all who participated and all who presented! The weekend was a success because everyone stepped up to make it work! I am continually inspired by the passion and professionalism lived out by ARARTE educators in classroom studios across the region.

We can look forward to the 6th Annual ARARTE Weekend Workshop hosted by Hong Kong International School October 18-20! Mark your calendars, spread the word! Katie Flowers, whom many of you will know from previous workshop presentations, and the HKIS ‘Company’, including (soon to be mother) Claire Kirk, John Lee and Bridget Rowe, are already shaping a vision for another rich and worthwhile workshop.

It has been incredibly rewarding to know that from those first notes I sketched out in an airport following yet another rather unsatisfying conference experience, the weekend workshop has flourished these past 5 years and continues to grow! Three components have formed the basis for the workshop from the beginning; hands-on art making, on-site visits at the host location, and sharing student art and lessons to take back to our studios.

I’m pleased to know the ARARTE Weekend Workshop responds to and focuses on the needs and desires of those of us engaged with student artists every day in the Asia region. We stay connected through ararte.ning.com that Kendra launched at the first workshop and continues to expertly manage since 2008. It is another place to network and learn from the experts; each other. There are many great forums and connections happening through this site!

It truly is a time to celebrate all that has transpired and anticipate all the amazing, artful happenings to come! Cheers!~ Joan
