Ceramics is my first love but I am now without a kiln and working with self hardening clay for the first time. I would love to get some inside tricks & techniques to working with the self hardening clay. I look forward to seeing some projects using this medium.

Comment by L. Holmes on March 8, 2012 at 10:54pm i'm going to be using ceramic underglaze pencils for a project. anyone used them before? especially for intricate pencil drawings on a white surface?
Comment by kendra Farrell on December 6, 2011 at 10:50am Hi deb as far as the clay busts we have been doing that here for 4 or 5 years now with the wooden armature with newspapers. I used Modeling the Head in Clay by Lucchesi as a visual reference for my students to follow. I also like the video on you tube by Faraut
http://youtu.be/rzBs3PM2W_4 Here is our flickr photo set from last year http://www.flickr.com//photos/kenfar/sets/72157626453124708/show/
the trick is to take a month to let them dry thoroughly before firing. We have them loosly under plastic for a week before letting them out in the open.
good luck. kendra

Comment by Deborah Coffey on December 5, 2011 at 5:47pm Hi Everyone,
I live in Bangkok and for the life of me, cannot find a dependable ceramic supply company. I bought some glazes from American Clay and they are just terrible. Does anyone have a better supplier in SE Asia? I will shop around for sure if you do.
Also, I am making clay busts (lifesize) with a class. I have a wooden armetuer covered with newspaper for support. Wondering if anyone has a published process to share.
Thanks for any help.
Deborah
Comment by Nicholas Coulter on May 4, 2011 at 10:26am Hi All,
Does anyone know of a ceramist who would work on commission for wheel work in Singapore? I have a student who wants a Greek urn styled pot as a base for painting on. She has very little skills and mine are worse. She will also want to customize the pot after it is turned to add feet and other appendaged. Any clues?
Comment by Andy Brown on April 27, 2011 at 11:28am Thanks so much Kendra! An incredibly prompt response to my SOS!
Ill let you know if any other problems come up!
Comment by kendra Farrell on April 27, 2011 at 11:11am we do clay heads here at ISB. We start with a wooden dowel placed into a base and wrap newspapers around it with tape. This we will let burn out in the kiln later. Here is a link to a helpful video http://youtu.be/rzBs3PM2W_4. I was inspired initially by the book Modeling the Head in Clay by Bruno Lucchesi. I have found the secret is once completed let them dry at least a month. Do not rush the process as it is difficult to have even thickness throughout.
Just found this lesson in the Blooming Palette teacher's blog that demonstrates an easy way to do clay busts.
good luck and let me know if you need any other help. Kendra
